CAREERS AND PATHWAYS

Benalla P-12 College has committed and qualified Careers staff who work with students, parents and the community to build a comprehensive careers education
and development program.

 

The Career rooms on both the Barkly and Faithfull Campuses are dedicated spaces where careers and course information is displayed. Students have access to computers to research
courses and careers online and staff is available to answer questions, provide information and specific counselling.


Students are able to make individual appointments at any time to discuss their aspirations, pathways and future plans. The Careers team also coordinate regular events to assist
students and their parents to research information and make decisions about future options.

 

At Benalla P-12 College we are committed to the improvement of student engagement and school completion and have in place careers and transition programs that provide every
student with career advice to support them to make effective course and career decisions, so that they can have every opportunity to succeed and lead fulfilling and productive lives.

 YEAR 9

Text Box: All Year 9 students at Benalla P-12 College complete a Careers Intensive Program. In addition to our Year 9 Advisory teachers,
we have presenters, community volunteers and trainers assisting with this program.

The work completed forms the basis of the ‘Student Achievement Portfolio’ which is stored in the careers room in hard copy form until Year 12 Completion.

 What else can be added to the portfolio? Students are encouraged throughout the year to collect evidence of their employability skills. They are asked to insert certificates for good attendance, academic achievement, sporting achievement, volunteer work and any other activities they take pride in. Students also select assignments, activities and project work from their classes that reflect their achievement. Photos, newsletter/newspaper articles are particularly important.

How can Parents Help?
In Term 3 parents are invited to the school to share their child's portfolio development.  This will include some 1:1 pathways planning and help with course selection for Year 10 and beyond. In the meantime, please help your child to organise materials they have at home that they can already include in their portfolio.

 

YEAR 10

Our Year 10 students participate in a Career Action Planning Day. Students revisit their Achievement Portfolios and complete a new Career Action Plan, focusing on “I Plan”. Ms Ann Forster, our Careers Coordinator, also provides information about University, TAFE and apprenticeship requirements to assist them to map possible pathways to Year 12 and beyond. A guest presenter, Glenn Irvine, builds on work completed in Year 9 to improve their communication and work skills, together with identifying strategies for success. The day is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Tomorrow:Today Foundation.

Year 10 Mentor teachers follow up on this day. This will include updating resumes and identifying subject choices for 2017 and 2018. Two important dates for Year 10 students and their parents/carers are:

  • Monday 18 JulySenior School Expo which includes an information session and opportunities to discuss subjects with current Senior School classroom teachers.

  • Wednesday 17 August – Course Counselling Day which involves individual appointments with mentor teachers to review student progress and select subjects for next year.

Year 10 students have the opportunity to attend the Zonta Young Women’s breakfast where they are addressed by locals representing a variety of careers and businesses.

Careers Intensive Focus Day – This day, organised in partnership with the local community gives students the opportunity to visit local businesses and industries and to speak with employers, the Defence Force and Universities and take part in workshops.

YEARS 11 & 12

CAPs plan are updated as part of our mentor program, with Year 11s focusing on “I Decide” and Year 12s on “I Apply”.

Description: H:\Excursions\IMG_9438.JPGDuring the year students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiences to add to their knowledge of various careers and assist them with their decision making about future study. These include:

  • North East Victoria Health Careers Forum – organised by NE Tracks LLEN – giving students the opportunity to hear about a wide range of careers in the health industry.

  • Students can attend the Zonta Young Women’s Breakfast where they are addressed by locals representing a variety of careers and businesses.

  • A bus tour visiting four Universities in Melbourne and students have the opportunity to meet former Benalla P-12 College students, ask questions and explore the accommodation and University grounds.

  • A  bus trip to the AGE VCE Careers Expo which further assists in the decision making with courses to select in VCE and then for further education after Year 12.

  • Attend a presentation by AgSchools who offer a Certificate III in Agriculture whilst students complete a School Based Apprenticeship or in a Gap Year.

  • VTAC Community Information Session to assist parents and students with the application process for University.

    Students have the opportunity to part in Work Experience, which can lead to a School Based Apprenticeship, where students can gain an industry based qualification.  We have a representative from Apprenticeships Matter come to the school weekly to assist with this program.

    Students also have the opportunity to take part in Work Experience as well as Structured Workplace Learning and Work Experience, connected with their VET subject, which allows them to acquire industry specific knowledge, skills and workplace experience before they leave school. This can contribute to their VCAL certificate. We have a representative from the NE Tracks LLEN to assist with this program.
