School Council

School Council Elections

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

School Principal
Barbara O'Brien

I was appointed Principal of Benalla P-12 College when all four schools in Benalla merged at the commencement of 2013.

I feel very privileged to be leading such a vibrant and unique educational setting.  Our College offers an exclusive education to the students of Benalla as it enables us to track all students' progress and provide a tailored academic program from Foundation to Year 12.  I am committed to ensuring Benalla P-12 College provides the right learning opportunities for all students and becomes the school of choice for families in Benalla.

This is my third year on the Benalla P-12 College School Council and the second as School Council President.  I have one daughter studying year 11 at Benalla P-12 College along with a son and daughter now studying at university who both attended our school.  I am very mindful of ensuring that whatever we do now does not adversely impact future councils.  We now have the opportunity to create a modern and engaging school for our current and future students and staff which is fantastic.  My personal mantra is to put the students at the centre of every decision we make.

I have just newly joined School Council in 2016.  My son is a Foundation at Avon St Campus.  By being a school councillor I hope to actively contribute in a positive way to the broader school community so that it is the best possible school for my children and other families in the future.

In 2016, I was elected to a Councillor role within the Benalla Rural City to support our local community.  I then joined Benalla P-12 College School Council in 2017.  I am committed to seeing positive change in our community, which I know begins with strong educational guidance and support.  After a signficant community change that occurred with the amalgamation transition of our public school structures, I felt a need to be a part of the rebuilding phase that our local public educaton sector is stilll undergoing.
I enjoy the changllenge and look forward to your feedback as we progress with the development of Benalla P-12 into the future.
